OVNI Audio has released a free, open-source binaural spatial engine for placing sound in real 3D space and setting it in motion, backed by measured acoustics rather than tricks.
Available in VST3 and AU plugin formats for Windows and macOS, Orbit lets a source be placed anywhere in 3D, sent orbiting, or flown past with genuine Doppler shift. It and works over headphones or speakers while staying mono-safe throughout.
Under the hood, a variable-position HRIR spatializer crossfades two bracketing voices with fractional-delay ITD so the source moves without clicking, while pitch bend on fly-bys comes from real propagation delay rather than a pitch-shifter, at zero added latency.
Orbit features
- The Radar, a drag-to-place 3D field for setting a source’s angle and distance.
- Doppler for eccentric orbit motion, with pitch rising and falling as the source passes near and far.
- Free, tempo-synced (1/4 to 1 bar), or Fixed placement modes tied to track tempo.
- Chaos for erratic, alien motion with darting speed and azimuth wobble.
- Width/Room controls for ear-shadow width and decorrelated early reflections that externalize sound outside the head.
- RACE crosstalk cancellation for speaker playback, with an IN PHASE mode guaranteeing mono compatibility, plus a stereo-linked true-peak-safe limiter.
Near-field sources under a meter get Duda-Martens proximity modeling for bass bloom and asymmetric ear-shadow, adding intimacy as a sound approaches.
Also available is an audio-reactive visual synthesizer for macOS that turns an image or video into a GPU particle field driven by sound. Supernova deforms a loaded image or video with 262,144 GPU particles that breathe, electrify, and explode on the kick before re-forming.
It ships two ways: as a VST3/AU plugin reading a DAW’s audio, and as a standalone app that captures a Mac’s entire system audio via ScreenCaptureKit with no drivers or routing setup, reacting to anything playing in Spotify, YouTube, Serato, or Ableton.
As a plugin, the audio path is a bit-exact, read-only tap; Supernova analyzes the sound to drive the visuals without ever touching the signal itself.
Supernova features
- 50 worlds, presets that each swap the particle physics, geometry, and color ramp in one click.
- An Intensity master fader controlling how hard the whole particle field reacts.
- Four control domains: Movement (flow, chaos, gravity), Matter (size, trails, plexus, glyphs), Camera (3D depth, rotate, orbit), and Color.
- 17 curated color look ramps baked in OKLab, plus a rotatable 3D cutout of the loaded subject.
- MIDI-triggered events, letting notes explode the field or fire directional rays in time with a performance.
- Output to a window, fullscreen display, or Syphon for OBS/Resolume, plus MP4/H.264 export with audio muxed in sync at custom lengths from 1 to 600 seconds.
The particle field is composited in linear additive HDR and resolved through an ACES filmic tonemap, so highlights bloom and roll off rather than clipping to flat white.
Ready-to-use installers for Supernova are free until November 23rd, 2026, after which they’ll be sold as a $15 USD pack; the source code itself remains free.
