OXO-Music has released a free MIDI step sequencer and arpeggiator built around a single idea: enter one chord and derive up to 6 independent, simultaneous sequences from it.
Oxo Steps can pull a bass line from the chord’s lowest note on one track, chord stabs from selected or fixed notes on another, a full arpeggio across all notes on a third, and occasional random in-key notes on a fourth, all updating together the moment the chord changes.
Up to 8 scenes can be built, each storing a chord plus its own pattern changes per track, for trying progression ideas quickly in a live or performance context.
Oxo Steps features
- Monophonic or polyphonic tracks with polymetric lanes (e.g. gate over 16 steps, notes over 12, octave over 6).
- Pattern direction: forward, backward, ping-pong, or random, plus predictable probability lane controls.
- Two CC lanes for sequencing external plugin parameters, and per-track offset in milliseconds for syncing external hardware.
- Chord memory and chord progression presets, savable and recallable for trying against the current sequences.
- Performance window with scene switching and a knob for every CC, plus MIDI Learn.
- MIDI file export for continuing a captured performance in the DAW, and undo/redo throughout.
Oxo Steps is a free download for macOS in VST3 and AU plugin formats. The previously released iPad version has free version (limited to 2 tracks), with full version available to unlock for $14.99 USD.
