OA-Labs has introduced a free software synthesizer instrument for macOS (Windows support coming).
Unpredictable by design and built to be played, Phosphor-1 is a virtual analog synth that aims to stay clean and musical when you want it to, and come apart in characterful ways when you push it.
At the heart of it is AGE, a master control that ages the whole instrument at once. Turn it up and pitch, filter, level and shape begin to drift, wander and sag together, with a chaos engine adding turbulent, evolving motion on top. Keep it low and the synth is pristine and exact. The instability is the character; the control is what makes it an instrument.
The synth features two oscillators plus sub, a morphing multimode filter, generative arpeggiator with groove, glitch and per-step probability, shaper to warp, curve, fold and bias the raw signal, and a built-in help mode. It comes with 68 presets to get you started.
Phosphor-1 is currently free to download in VST3 and AU plugin formats for Mac.
