Fabrizio Poce has announced two new Max for Live devices which address integration of (external) Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools with Ableton Live.
The J74 MIDI Assistant is an intelligent MIDI clipboard utility. It allows you to exchange MIDI data with external applications, such as web AI tools, through simple “copy & paste” actions for MIDI (data) clips. The plug and play utility is bidirectional. It gives you both MIDI export (copy) & import (paste) capabilities. You can use “any” web AI tool with it, without any software integration.
With this tool you can exchange MIDI data with any web AI tool (the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Co-Pilot, etc.) and use this data for MIDI AI prompt requests and prompts results. The “J74 MIDI Assistant” allows you to generate MIDI data with an AI tool and then paste that directly as a MIDI clip. It also allows manipulation of MIDI data by an AI, MIDI you already have in your Ableton Live project, as an AI can analyze it and modify it or even arrange a new MIDI part based on it.
The J74 Assistant Developers Tools package offers flexible end-to-end integration for “local-coding-enabled” AI tools, such as Gemini CLI, making possible to “co-work” with the AI on a Ableton Live project.
The package provides connection, rules and methods for the AI Tool to bidirectionally interoperate with the LOM API of Ableton Live. The AI is automatically instructed upon starting and can perform the role of Ableton Live assistant straight away, based on the producer’s intent expressed in natural language and the AI background knowledge of harmony, melody, rhythm and song structures. The toolset can also be used for automation purposes. For this to be possible a one-off setup procedure and some software installation is required (Google’s Gemini CLI, also requires a Google account). The provided documentation explicitly guide you through this process.
J74 MIDI Assistant is available to purchase for 12 EUR, while J74 Assistant Developers Tools is 24 EUR (includes MIDI Assistant). Ableton Live Suite or Standard with Max for Live installed is required.
