Mark Wright has released a standalone chiptune instrument and studio app for Windows, built around ten emulated sound chips rebuilt register by register.
Renata lets producers design original chip sounds on real emulated hardware, compose full tracks in a chip-native studio, and convert or re-voice classic chiptune sources into MIDI, stems, or native chip formats, all running fully offline with no account or cloud component.
Renata features
- Ten emulated sound chips, including SID 6581/8580, YM2149, AY-3-8910, SN76489, NES 2A03, Game Boy DMG, and Amiga Paula.
- A Sounds & Instruments Generator with chip-accurate oscillators, filters, and ADSR envelopes, exportable as WAV or per-voice stems.
- Renata Studio, a chip-native DAW with Arrangement and Session views, piano roll, a 12-instrument chip set, a mixer with nine effects, and automation.
- Conversion of classic chiptune files into DAW-ready MIDI, clean per-voice stems, or re-voiced performances on a different chip.
- Eight musical outputs across seven chip formats (.ym, .vgm, .mod, .sid, .nsf, .gbs, .ay) plus MIDI as a central hub, with several formats exporting as real executable players via Renata’s own 6502, SM83, and Z80 drivers.
- A rule-based Song Generator trained on public chiptune archives, plus a visualizer with over 15,000 presets and nine pixel-art interface themes.
Renata plays back over 230 chiptune formats and is built entirely from scratch, with no shared sample packs or subscription requirements. All sounds and compositions made in the app are royalty-free.
Renata is available now for Windows for $10 USD. Support of macOS and Linux is planned.
