The Mix Challenge audio community is celebrating its 100th Songwriting Competition, and with it 100 consecutive months of encouraging people to “just make music”.
Organizer Roland Löhlbach says:
“The Songwriting Competition began as our second community game in September 2017. Over the past eight years, it has featured a wide range of creative challenges. From image-based prompts and genre-focused themes (e.g. Electronic or Rock) to special tasks like writing in a specific song key, following a set chord progression, or simulating a call for bids for a fictional video game “currently in development”. A recurring highlight is the annual “Community Scramble”, where participants must create songs using only community-sourced sound material.
Making and enjoying music is a powerful form of escape, relaxation, and healing. The Mix Challenge audio community has supported this since day one. This game allows participants to submit “work-in-progress” entries, gather feedback, and refine tracks before the deadline. After submissions close, the focus shifts to reflecting on the experience and learning how to provide constructive feedback to others. The more participants join, the more valuable the feedback for everyone.
There are more exciting challenges on the horizon for 2026.”
The following challenges are currently open to compete in:
- Mix Challenge 107: Have the chance to work on an Alternative Rock production by the band “mtvkid”. Deadline: December 21st, 2025, 23:59 UTC+1/CET.
- Songwriting Competition 100: The theme is “Journey” (Picture Theme). Create a production in any music genre you feel like (fitting to the given premise). Deadline: December 24th, 2025, 23:59 UTC+1/CET.
Key concepts and features of the community:
- A space for musicians to “learn by doing” without risking paid projects.
- Work on audio material that you may normally not have access to (Mix Challenge)
- Interesting, monthly recurring songwriting games with occasional twists (Songwriting Competition)
- Opportunities to win music software licenses from sponsors including Acon Digital, Audified, BLEASS, Cherry Audio, Ghostwave Audio, Hollow Sun, Hornet Plugins, IK Multimedia, JRR Sounds, Kilohearts, kv331 audio, Luftrum, Masterlab Audio, Metric Halo, Musiclab, NoiseWorks Audio, NUGEN Audio, Rekkerd Sounds, Satyatunes Graphic and Sound Design and Tone2.
