Quietformat has introduced a new audio plugin that is designed to quickly and intuitively create tape texture, pitch movement (wow and flutter), and softened high-frequency response associated with cassette tape.
An analog-style cassette tape simulator, Cassette LT-1 is built around four tape conditions, ranging from clean to damaged. Each condition has its own tonal behavior and pitch movement, allowing users to move easily from subtle tape coloration to unstable, rough lo-fi textures. The tape response also changes naturally with input level, so musical results can be achieved with minimal adjustment.
During development, we referenced the tone and feel of a cassette-based multitrack recorder in our studio. The goal wasn’t to recreate a specific unit, but to use the character and behavior of a real cassette recording environment as a reference point when shaping the overall sound of the plugin.
Another key design point is how space is handled. The shimmer reverb in Cassette LT-1 is placed before the tape stage. As a result, the reverb signal itself passes through the tape processing, and its tone and stability change depending on the selected tape condition. This makes the sense of space feel naturally tied to the tape state rather than added as a separate effect.
Cassette LT-1 also features input and output gain (tape drive), high-pass and low-pass filters, tilt EQ, stereo spread, and optional tape hiss, allowing users to quickly shape tone and character.
Available in VST3 and AU plugin formats for Windows and Mac, Cassette LT-1 is on sale for the intro price of $26.99 USD until January 12th, 2026 (regular $49 USD). A free trial is available to download to try the plugin.
