Klevgrand has just released a new reverb plugin, and regular contributor Aphelion’s Orbit shares his take on it.

What is it?

Revolv Real Spaces offers a distinctive convolution reverb experience, merging your audio with an impulse response (IR) from authentic acoustic spaces captured by Oscar Björk during his travels across Sweden’s unique sonic landscapes.

Intro

This reverb offering is distinct from any I’ve experienced recently. It boasts sonic depth and versatility, enhanced by an exceptionally unique interface, all contained within a compact package. A closer examination is warranted.

Setup

The process is straightforward and simple. There are no issues at all. Just install and enter your serial number.

First Impressions

The developers have successfully captured an essential aspect of this reverb plugin from the outset: its visual presentation. It encourages you to interact with the controls and explore the distinct sonic qualities of the reverb recorded in various locations across Sweden, such as museum hallways, airplane runways, the Pickbackshallen Ice Rink, Venngarn Castle, and a school canteen. All of this is encapsulated in a well-designed plugin, which intrigues even before you consider the most crucial aspect: its sound.

Features

This reverb unit boasts a thoughtful design with user-friendly controls that simplify its application in your projects. The front panel features a visual dial selector for locations, offering a straightforward yet efficient dry/wet mix.

Double-clicking on a location reveals a secondary interface, providing further options to edit and fine-tune aspects such as decay, pre-delay, mix, gain, width, microphone placement, and EQ.

Additionally, the designers enrich the experience by including a historical overview of the sites where the impulse responses were captured.

The Sound

Real Spaces serves not only as a traditional reverb but also as a sonic journey to unique destinations, which can then be finely tuned and integrated into your sound mix. I was eager to explore the distinctive recorded impulse responses with instrument tracks from Objekt and Friktion Modeled Strings from Reason Studios. To my delight, it was remarkably simple to create distinct tones that seamlessly blended into a basic mix.

Alot of the spaces that were recorded are good, you can really hear the natural room processing of some of these locations. Adjust some mic placements, decay and pre-delay and I was able to quickly get something I like.

Pros

  • Solid presets
  • Easy controls
  • Low CPU
  • Scalable UI

Cons

  • None

Final Thoughts

I can envision this reverb as one of my go-to effects. It possesses a delightful tone and character that encourages exploration and enhance. To me, that’s the essence of what a reverb should do: it should challenge you to enhance your sonic listening experience. This reverb is suitable for both basic applications and sound designers of various levels. This one is worth the demo download and trial.

A solid recommendation from Aphelion’s Orbit! If you’re interested in picking Revolv up yourself, you can get it with the intro discount at Klevgrand website and from Plugin Boutique through the end of the month.
