UK based sound designer, composer and producer Rick Zariis has launched a crowdfunding campaign in support of Ambient Coast, a ’90s inspired chillout album using an all hardware setup to create a genuine nostalgic experience.
The goal of Ambient Coast is to create a double album featuring 20 original tracks, produced entirely using authentic 1990s music hardware. My aim is to give listeners that nostalgic feeling and transport them back to a simpler time.
Rather than recreating the sound of the era with studio modern equipment, I want to return to the original hardware and relive the creative process that shaped some of the most influential ambient and chillout music of the 1990s. From the unique workflow and creative limitations to the distinctive sampling techniques, every part of the album will be crafted using the same methods that defined the genre.
This isn’t just about recreating a sound—it’s about rediscovering the creative journey that made it so special.
Rick aims to build a dedicated vintage studio centred around classic hardware samplers, synthesizers, effects processors, recording equipment, and early software sequencers, to create the album from start to finish, while documenting the entire process through regular behind-the-scenes videos and studio updates.
Available rewards include various editions of the Ambient Coast album, as well as two days of recording with Zariis including access to all project hardware at his studio, and more.
