sonicLAB has announced an update to its shape-shifting audiovisual synthesis software which merges fluid dynamic simulation with advanced sound synthesis algorithms.
Version 2 of Protean offers improved performance and superior sonic quality.
Changes in Protean v2
- The audio engine now uses less processing power, handles silent voices more efficiently, and remains stable during preset changes.
- Preset changes, voice resets, gain movement and spatial panning are now smoother, with fewer sudden level changes.
- Pitch and envelope timing now remain accurate with FM synthesis, modulation, pitch variation and the separation between emitters A and B have also been improved.
- Protean can now create an additional 16-channel third-order AmbiX recording alongside the normal stereo recording. The Ambisonic file uses ACN channel order, SN3D normalization, 32-bit floating-point audio, peak normalization to −1 dBFS, and each particle is positioned using its full 3D location.
- Individual delay effects of every voice are included in the Ambisonic recording, including feedback and complete delay tails. The stereo master reverb is not included.
- Non-realtime disk recording: Press A to enable or disable 3OA (ambisonic) recording; press S to start or stop recording. The screen shows 3OA ON, 3OA OFF, or a blinking recording indicator.
A free upgrade for the existing users of Protean, new customers can purchase Protean for Windows and macOS for £115 GBP. It comes bundled with the Protean Remote control VST3/AU utility.
