Swedish mixing engineer and a three-time Latin GRAMMY winner Thomas Juth has recently published a book that sets out to help you learn to shape the sound and serve the music.
Rather than being a typical technical book about EQ settings, compressor tricks, and plugin chains, Mixing from the Inside Out looks more at the thinking and listening behind mixing: decision-making, taste, confidence, doubt, perspective, working with artists, and understanding what a song actually needs.
Mixing from the Inside Out explores the part of mixing that cannot be found in a preset or learned by memorizing technical rules. It is about listening more closely, trusting your own judgment, and getting a clearer sense of what your decisions are doing to the music.
Grammy Award-winning mix engineer Thomas Juth has spent more than twenty years working in mixing and music production. Over that time, he has come to believe that understanding what a compressor or EQ does is rarely the difficult part. The harder part is deciding when to use it, why it is needed, and when the music may be better left alone.
Rather than giving you another set of fixed rules, the focus is on the thinking behind the process: how to make clearer decisions, stay connected to the music, and know when a mix is actually finished.
Mixing from the Inside Out is available in paperback and Kindle editions at Amazon.
