Tunary Instruments has introduced a generative bass instrument built as a writing tool first and a synth second.
REHEAT lets users pick a groove from one of 10 genres, press New LINE, and the plugin composes a bassline from a real chord progression — root on the change, chord tones on the beats, passing notes between, and a chromatic approach into the turnaround.
A single bar is written as a cell and then replayed against each chord, so the result repeats and becomes a hook rather than wandering the way step-randomisers do. The line then drags straight out of the plugin as MIDI, onto any track, to be played by whatever bass instrument the producer already owns. The built-in three-layer bass engine — clean sub, detuned body and driven top through a cascaded 24dB/oct filter with saturation between the stages — is there to audition the part, not to replace the user’s own sound.
On sale for the intro price of $39 USD (regular $49 USD), the plugin is available for Windows and macOS in VST3 and AU formats. A full-featured demo runs in the browser with no download.
Also available are the SILT generative instrument which features four short melodic loops of different lengths which drift slowly out of phase through a warm tape machine, and ARGISH, a self-playing drone synthesizer that scores itself. A bundle of all 3 Tunary Instruments plugins is currently on sale for $99 USD.
