Unusable Engineering has announced the release of its second synth, a multi-tap delay, a reverb and a free spatial modulator for both Windows and Mac (VST3/AU).
Partials & Discrepancies (79 EUR incl. VAT) is an 8 voice additive poly-synth designed to make additive synthesis accessible through a much simpler abstraction model than what you usually get. It include lots of sonic motion capabilities within a simple interface without modulation matrixes or multi page layouts.
The core idea was not just to make another additive synth, but to make one that feels faster to work with. Instead of presenting partials as a long technical list, the synth is built around a visual control model where groups of partials can be shaped, offset, warped, and pushed into disagreement in more immediate ways.
That makes it possible to move quickly between harmonic, dissonant, animated, and unstable sounds without losing the overview. The point is not to make additive synthesis feel simplified, but to make it feel playable.
Alongside the new synth, Unusable Engineering has expanded its product line further into spatial and movement-based effects.
Binaural Modulator (FREE) is a spatial modulation effect built around a room model with a fixed listener and moving sound-source nodes.
At its simplest it can work as an auto-pan, but the room model, node movement, Doppler, and stereo linking make it capable of tremolo, rotating-speaker style movement, rough chorus behavior, and more animated spatial misuse.
Geometry Delay (29 EUR incl. VAT) is a multi-tap delay built around a simple room abstraction.
Walls, floor, and ceiling act as taps, and moving the play-and-listen node shifts several delay times at once. Because the node can also orbit in 3D, Geometry Delay can smear, wobble, and bend in pitch through Doppler-like motion while staying quick to set up.
Geometry Reverb is a hall reverb using the same room-based abstraction model and 3D orbital modulation approach as Geometry Delay.
Geometry Reverb came out of a failed reverb experiment, later paired with the geometry control model. It is free for paying customers, new or old, and available from the account page together with its license and other downloads.
