Puremagnetik has announced the release of Hotel Prepared Piano and Amplified Cactus, two free Ableton Live Packs inspired by the experimental, avant-garde composer John Cage.
Amplified Cactus a la John Cage
Puremagnetik’s free Amplified Cactus Pack includes a drum rack of “plucked”, percussive articulations and a multisampled rack of “scraped” sounds. Rocks, grass, paper and feathers are among the exciters used to create these sound varieties.
Amplified Cactus was recorded using a barrel cactus mic’d with TranceAudio surface pickups and a custom built low-noise preamplifier.
Hotel Room Prepared Piano
Whilst abroad in Israel, Puremagnetik sound developer Micah Frank found his hotel room equipped with a vintage upright piano. After a few attempts to create a conventional upright piano recording, the plan was aborted due to outside noise. Instead, Micah jammed paperclips, seashells, twigs and pieces of plastic into the piano strings and recorded two octaves of prepared piano tones and noises.
Puremagnetik’s Prepared Piano is available as a free Ableton Live Pack that includes a multisampled Rack of the two-octave piano and a selection of effects captured during the recording process.
The packs are available to download at no charge.

Bad Cat Media has released The Performachord, a virtual instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
“The Performachord” is a reed based instrument thats somewhat of a cross between an accordion, and an organ. It is also commonly known as a “Chord Organ”, among a couple other names. The left hand is played by “push down” buttons offering different voiceing’s including: Roots, Major, Minor, & Seventh. Although this may seem basic to some, with a little creativity, and a decent grasp of theory, one can actually create numerous chord voicings using a combination of these buttons alone.
On the right hand, it has a keyboard to allow for melodies to be played in conjunction with the chords, or simply to be used for solo melody purposes. The character of its sound is unmistakeable, and easily fits well into the common “accordion based sound” that composers turn to day after day for TV/film work. However, it is far from from a one trick pony, and can easily be used in modern EDM/House music for either chord or melody.
The Performachord features
- A deeply sampled Performachord instrument.
- Over 700 samples, 1.12 GB download.
- Requires Native Instruments Kontact 5.3 or higher.
The library is available to purchase for $19.99 USD.

Rob Papen has announced that BLUE II, the successor to the popular BLUE synthesizer instrument for Windows and Mac, will be released on March 10th, 2014.
Blue reflected Rob Papen’s cutting-edge, creative, and musical approach towards developing virtual instruments by first delivering FM and subtractive synthesis, then duly adding Phase Distortion and wave shaping synthesis into the highly creative mix to create one seriously creative combination. Rob Papen himself called it ‘Crossfusion synthesis’ since it covered so much musical ground so effectively.
Blue II remains true to that ethos with even more sound dimensions and features to its extended name, starting with six oscillators beating at its musically creative heart. These can be connected in various ways, together with two analogue-style modelled stereo filters with 27 different filter types, an enormous range of processing and modulation options, sequencer, and an incredibly powerful arpeggiator.
BLUE II will cost 149 EUR / $179 USD. The original BLUE synthesizer is still available at the reduced price of 79 EUR / $99 USD until March 10th.
An upgrade to BLUE II will be offered at a discounted price (44 EUR / $49 USD) upon release. More details here.
