The original Devastor was the first and perhaps one of the most successful plug-ins of the Silverline Collection. With a simple interface and a great sound, this multi-band distortion plug-in is still a favorite for many. Now meet Devastor 2.

Devastor is a deceptively simple yet remarkable Multiband Distortion Unit. It is an enhanced version of the distortion unit you can find in Phoscyon, but with full control over multiband processing. This elevates its sonic mangling capabilities to an entirely new level!

Devastor 2 features a dynamics flattener module (which compresses the input signal), a diode-clipper, three multi-mode filters, and a limiter module (optional).

The limiter is new in version 2, and the dynamics flattener has been improved with better peak detection and more natural envelopes. The analog-modeled filters were refined for a more analog feel.

The signal routing has also been reworked. Instead of the pre/post filter switches in the original, Devastor 2 now has selector that offers a total of 9 possible pre/post/side configurations for routing the signal through the filters and clipper module.

Devastor 2 is built on a new framework, which allows presets to be stored in a tag-based system that can be filtered on type, strength, and destination. The GUI is now available in a larger version, and the plug-in configuration has also been improved.

In the video below I take a quick look at Devastor 2.

So what do I think?

First of all, while it doesn’t do anything for the sound, I really enjoy the new large GUI. The knobs have a different 3d perspective which is more flat, and the whole thing just looks gorgeous to me. The new preset system is a nice addition as well, and the included presets showcase Devastor pretty well.

Devastor 2 builds upon the strengths of the original. It is still easy to use, and the sound is most excellent. With new signal routing options you get a wider range of sound. When you start playing around with controls you can hear that Devastor has a musical quality to it.

If you are looking for a no-nonsense distortion unit that delivers a high quality sound, you should definitely give Devastor 2 a spin. Priced at 39 EUR it offers great value for money.
