Garrian XFX Concert Grand

MakeMusic and Abbey Road Studios have announced the release Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand, a new virtual piano instrument.

To create this new instrument, Yamaha’s flagship CFX Concert Grand piano was recorded in Abbey Road Studios’ historic Studio One by renowned engineers, blending the latest technology with legendary equipment and acoustics.

“We are very pleased to announce that we have released the CFX Concert Grand,” said Gary Garritan, MakeMusic director of instrumental sciences. “This is the most detailed and advanced project our team has completed. We are honored to have this partnership with Abbey Road Studios, and the support of Yamaha, and are excited about the enthusiastic reaction this virtual piano has received so far. Today we’re proud to make an instrument with this kind of power, richness and clarity available to everyone.”

Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand provides users three discrete microphone perspectives:

  • Classic – captures the natural tonal character, clarity and nuance of the CFX.
  • Contemporary – produces a bright and brilliant sound with definitive attack from the hammers.
  • Player – delivers the unique experience of playing from the piano bench in Studio One.

The CFX Concert Grand includes the powerful ARIA player, and is designed to be a perfect addition to music notation-based programs, like Finale, as well as to all sequencers and digital audio workstations.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Gary and the MakeMusic team on the CFX project,” said Mirek Stiles, head of audio products at Abbey Road Studios. “The ability to mix both close and ambient signals, as if you are in Studio One, is simply breathtaking. This beautifully sampled instrument is worthy of the Abbey Road Studios name.”

The CFX Concert Grand is available for purchase for $299.95 USD.

K-Sounds releases Epic Grand for Motif XF/MOXF & Motif XS

K-Sounds Epic Grand

K-Sounds has announced the release of Epic Grand for the Yamaha Motif XF/MOXF and Motif XS, featuring detailed stereo samples of a Japanese grand piano.

Epic Grand was designed with quality in mind. The samples were recorded and edited at 176.4kHz, 24 / 32 bits, then converted to Motif-compatible specifications for the final product. A close mic position was used, creating an up-front, studio sound. The stereo image is wide, centered, and mono-compatible. Every note has a generous, natural-sounding sustain.

Two bank sizes are included. The 505Mb bank offers eight sampled dynamic levels for realistic dynamic response across the keyboard. Additional independent elements such as damper resonance, release resonance, and hammer noise samples bring the piano to life. The 126Mb bank includes four sampled dynamic layers plus damper resonance, release resonance, and hammer noises.

Epic Grand’s damper resonance samples are true recordings of the sympathetic string resonance heard when notes are played with the damper pedal down. Sampling the actual resonance of a real piano provides authenticity that surpasses digital effects and convolution. This resonance is presented as an independent component of the instrument, allowing users to adjust its volume or disable it altogether.

Epic Grand is designed to be incredibly playable. It was constantly played during its development to ensure that it responds dynamically and musically.

Epic Grand features

  • Close-miked samples of a Japanese grand piano.
  • 8 stereo sampled dynamic layers (505Mb bank).
  • 4 stereo sampled dynamic layers (126Mb bank).
  • True sampled damper resonance.
  • Release resonance samples.
  • Hammer noise samples.
  • Big “studio” sound with modest sample memory requirements.
  • Wide stereo image.
  • Mono compatible.
  • Fully programmed for the Motif XF / MOXF and Motif XS.
  • Designed to be incredibly playable.

Epic Grand for the Motif XF/MOXF and Motif XS is available for purchase for $125 USD. Additional formats are available.
