Brady Boettcher wrote in to share about his open-source, cross platform synthesizer gRainbow, a colorful instrument that uses pitch detection to choose candidates for granular synthesis or sampling.
In an attempt to overcome shortcomings of traditional granular synths, gRainbow is designed to use longer, pitch-diverse audio clips.
It automatically produces harmonics matched for MIDI input, and it generates harmonics that are already near their target pitch in order to avoid too much timestretching and unwanted artifacts.
When an audio file is loaded into gRainbow, a pitch detection analysis is ran to segment the clip into discrete pitches over time. Next, gRainbow finds up to 6 pitch-matched position candidates for each note, guaranteeing harmonically agreeable grains. Finally, the user customizes each note and its generators (i.e. changing parameters and candidates) to their liking, and can save everything into a preset to avoid processing things again next time.
The latest version of gRainbow (v0.2.2) is available to download for Windows, macOS and Linux in VST3, AU and LV2 plugin formats.
