Aphelion’s Orbit has returned with a review of UVI most recent virtual instrument, the HX-ODDY vintage analog synth.
What is it?
Virtual synth recreation based upon a hardware synth from 1972 called the Odyssey MK1, UVI meticulously re-imagined this synth with all the things we love about today tools, such as wavetables and physical modeling.
Who is it for?
Everyone. Whether you are a novice that is beginning to understand sound design, or someone looking for an out of the box synth that can inspire or fill in the gaps of your latest creation.
First impressions
I purchased this synth as I do most of the UVI products the day it dropped. I believe UVI’s catalog is second to none. PX Sunbox and Mission Six being 2 of my favorites as I have an affinity for vintage and weird synths.
So, as I always do when I get a new toy, I go through the presets to see what inspires me to write. Or what I might be able to tweak quickly to forge on with an idea. My initial thoughts were many of the presets sound thin, digital, and uninspiring. A couple of standout sequences are conspiracy 1K, Jungle chase 1K, and Ettore Echoes are all dope and in beast mode.
Pros:
- Onboard FX
- Edit Mode
- Arp Mode
- Excellent UI
- Filters
Cons:
- Too many uninspiring presets
Final Thoughts
This synth recreation is good but not great. Though the original concept of this synth begins in 1972, the recreation does have an ’80s sound and sensibility to it. The thing that elevates this synth are the sequences that utilize the Arp. The sequenced preset section is where I understood just how powerful and good this synth could be.
So, if you are looking for out of box sounds this may not be the synth for you, however if you like to tweak and sound design this synth can create and bring forth some interesting ideas.
Other solid presets include, Elfs Blue, Retro Race, Speedrun.
Thanks Aphelion’s Orbit! You can find more details on HX-ODDY at the UVI website. The instrument is available to purchase for 79 USD/EUR.
