Wire Grind has released a free effect plugin that adds noise to audio. Ranging from subtle grittiness to extreme noisy fuzz, Rasp is similar to a distortion, without clipping waveforms.
Subtle grittiness has a variety of uses, for example, making vocals and drums sound more rough. As for adding higher levels of noise, music makers may wish to do this prior to modulated and automated filtering effects.
Generally speaking, making a track noisier widens its spectrum, and this gives filters more information to respond to. Currently, modulated filtering is popular in various genres of electronic music. Automated filtering is also relatively widespread in electronic music. For example, it is often used to create a “builds up” effect just before a new section of a song begins.
Rasp is available to download as a VST3 plugin for Windows.
