Audio Thing has announced the release of a major update to its faithful emulation of the early ’70s RE-201 vintage tape echo by Roland.

Now available on iOS, Outer Space 2 was fully re-coded but with the same classic tape echo sound. It comes with a brand new retina GUI, oversampling destination for echo and preamp, momentary tape touch/drop, and more synced delay values. The update includes macOS 14 Sonoma support and CPU and memory usage has been improved.

As the original unit, Outer Space features a tape echo section with three playback heads and two spring reverb tanks. We have modelled three different tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analog imperfections of tape recording/playback.

We have also modelled the ballistic response of the delay rate (repeat rate) which can create eerie pitch shifts (due to the Doppler effect), one of the classic tape echo-based sound effects.

Outer Space 2 for Windows, Mac and Linux (VST/VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP) is on sale for 39 USD/EUR at the AudioThing store and from Plugin Boutique until January 6th, 2024 (regular 69 USD/EUR). Owners of the original version can upgrade for free. The iOS/AUv3 version is $12.99 USD in the App Store.
