Berlin-based synth-maker KOMA Elektronik has teamed up with musicians and instrument-makers Passepartout Duo to launch a Kickstarter campaign for their new touchless electromagnetic synthesizer.
A polyphonic analog synthesizer, the Chromaplane is designed around ten tunable electromagnetic fields that are emitted from its aluminum surface. Using two included electromagnetic pickups, you detect these fields translating physical gestures into expressive musical ideas with immediacy.
Just like its unique appearance, the instrument is played in a unique way. The pickups are the main way in which you interact with the instrument, drawing lines over its surface to reveal ethereal drones, lively melodies, or distorted noise. This unorthodox approach is an invitation to invent new techniques and to make a very personal connection with the instrument – there is no right or wrong way to play.
The Chromaplane is a standalone device including a filter and a delay, but it can also be easily integrated into a wider setup thanks to a variety of connectivity options.
A special tuner was also designed for the instrument: it operates silently, sensing the note through its magnetic field. Placing the tuner over the surface will display the detected note, so even tuning the instrument can become a totally novel experience.
“We imagined a device that could combine the expressivity and immediacy of an acoustic instrument, alongside the endless possibilities of electronic sound design. The most subtle gestures translate immediately into sound, giving a powerful connection between your hands and your ears.”
The Kickstarter pre-order campaign for the Chromaplane launches on July 23rd, 2024. Special pricing, bundles, and additional goodies will be featured.
