Wire Grind has released Woctavia, an octave doubling fuzz effect that models the Tycobrahe Octavia guitar effects pedal.
Wire Grind performed detailed analysis on an authentic Tycobrahe Octavia pedal. They identified many of the characteristics produced by this pedal, and they then replicated these characteristics in their effect algorithm.
Woctavia includes an anti-aliasing feature. This feature uses oversampling to produce a higher quality audio. Woctavia also includes an additional operational mode referred to as “Warmth.” This mode has a less gritty, less buzzy sound than the vintage model.
Octave doubling fuzz belongs to a unique class of distortion effects. Such effects are often said to generate a note one octave higher than the note being played. Octave doubling fuzz was used heavily by Jimi Hendrix, and it can be heard in his solos on such songs as “Purple Haze” and “Fire.”
Replicas of the the Tycobrahe Octavia pedal have been used widely by guitar players for decades. Original 1970’s Tycobrahe Octavias are few in number and they have been known to sell at auction for thousands of dollars.
