Review: ModeAudio Beat Scenes for Massive + Win a free copy!

ModeAudio Beat Scenes

With Beat Scenes, ModeAudio takes on the sound of the L.A. beat scene, an experimental style that mixes beats with various genres of music, as heard on albums by the likes of the Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Shlohmo and Flying Lotus.

The pack features a collection of 60 synth presets for the Massive synthesizer by Native Instruments.

Just as the Beat Scene turned Hip Hop on its head, so we’ve done with the NI Massive soft synth, transforming its static digital precision into melting, analog-style warmth and vibrant tonal movement.

We’ve dialled in drifting pitches, spiralling vibrato, colourful chorus and hit the filter sweet-spots to deliver a set of 60 warm and worn presets of deepest character and vibe. With all 8 macro controls assigned for every preset, tweaking each sound to perfectly fit your project is but the twist of a dial away!

The pack includes a selection of bass sounds, chords, flute, keys, leads, organ, pads, percussion, sound fx, synths and vibes.

Each patch comes with a tempo and key labeled MIDI file to demonstrate how you could use the sounds.

Beat Scenes is available for £13 GBP / 15 EUR.

So what do I think?

Beat Scenes offers a great selection of sounds that work well for the L.A. beat scene mixture of hip hop beats and left-field electronic music. Lots of dusty sounds with some rough edges.

ModeAudio always comes up with some unique, original sounds, and Beat Scenes is no different. The bass sounds are raw and intense, and the chords have plenty of modulation to get that drifting feel. A lot of the keys, leads and synths make good use of effects like delay and reverb for a dreamy touch. Add to that a nice variety of pads, some percussion, vibes and sound effects, and the odd organ and flute sound (which is lovely, but nothing much like a flute actually), and you have a really nice mix of ingredients to cook up some tracks.

The macro controls for each patch are assigned to useful parameters so you can further sculpt the sounds with ease.

In short, a great pack for LA beat scene type music and beyond!

Admittedly, I’m unfamiliar with LA’s “beat scene,” but the sample/trailer sounds rad as hell. Those are some really great sounds!

  • Peter Jones

Huge fan of guys like Mndsgn, Lotus, Tokimonsta, etc. Would love to see what’s going on under the hood on some of these sounds.

Sounds like another nice pack from modeaudio. Got a few packs from them and they sound great. I find it hard to use complete loops in music so I usually use the separate drum samples they include :)

  • Can always use more sounds.

  • And the winner is… Derivando!
