Sun.io has released VI-Celestia, a free virtual synthesizer library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
VI-Celestia is a synth for Kontakt that uses tonemachine formants to manipulate different kinds of pure wave shapes, instrument sounds and sound fx to create new sounds. The sounds that can be produced are basically endless.
VI-Celestia has 3 banks (tabs), in each bank one can select either a shape, instrument or sound-fx to work with. So in total 3 sound sources can be mixed together. Each bank stands on it’s own, therefore each sound can be manipulated. The last tab is the mixer where one can do additional processing of the 3 sound sources. With the red display one can select a sound to work on. To enable a sound, click either P1, P2 or P3. This corresponds to either: SHAPES, INSTRUMENTS or SOUND FX. With the arrow keys it is possible to browse through the sound sources. Usually, one can produce a lot of different sounds with P1, the SHAPES alone. There are a lot of knobs that can be tweaked. The Formant, Speed, Smoothing, Cutoff are necessary to tweak to produce a sound, as they control the sound source and the respective low-pass filter. Of course, tweaking the ADSR is usually needed to create a certain sound. Each bank has it’s own 3 band EQ, Shape modulators, Effects and a Arpeggiator. The modulators can be activated by clicking the shape images on the right side. So to enable the Sine modulator, click the sine wave image. Not very intuitive, so I guess it was worth mentioning.
VI-Celestia does not produce instant sounds, it is a synthesizer that needs tweaking. If you are looking for instant sounds, then this is not for you. However, VI-Celestia can load and save settings. It is possible to save your configuration by pressing the “SAVE” button. You can also load a preset, by clicking on “LOAD”. These presets are stored as a NKA file. Which basically is a text file which contains all parameters for easy sharing. Note: each bank must be saved independently, and the mixer tab settings will not be stored. The “Data” folder has therefore 3 folders: Bank 1, Bank 2, Bank 3. This way you can store a preset and later retrieve it in the bank it belongs to. It’s not possible to load a preset for Bank 1 into Bank 2.
It is also possible to assign 9 CC controls to various knobs. 3 per bank. Click the MIDI CC MAPPING to select a knob to assign it to. The CC number can be selected by dragging with the mouse over the black CC box. So you could assign the Cutoff to CC1 and thereby control it with the modwheel. Etc.

The instrument has 42 handcrafted drones. They are all around 1 minute in length and in Stereo. Hope you enjoy it, I love creating these patches.
The library is a free download (~190MB compressed). All samples were saved in the ‘NCW’ Lossless Sample Compression format to reduce file size.

Sun.io has announced “Lighter Glitch”, a free sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

So I was a little bored today. Instead of being a couch potato, I decided to sample a bunch of lighters and matches and make them a bit glitchy.
The result was pretty interesting, it makes a somewhat creepy atmospheric sound. A basic Arp is included.

Sun.io has announced Pink Tambourine, a free sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

This patch contains a sampled tambourine. It has 5 round robin layers, each containing 8 individual hits. This tambourine patch only works in the latest version of Kontakt.

sun.io has released a free sample pack featuring the sounds of a Jackson Pro Series RR24 Rhoads electric guitar.
Jackson guitar instrument for NI Kontakt by sun.io.
This patch contains powerchords and palm-mutes sampled from a Jackson Pro Series guitar.
There are 9 round robin layers for each chord. All samples were recorded clean, This means
that you can add any effect -like distortion- yourself through the use of a plugin.
The patch works in Kontakt version 5.0.3 and upwards.
sun.io is currently working on sampling the whole instrument.
The sample pack is available to download at no cost (100 MB download).
sun.io has released Grasshopper, a free sample pack for Native Instruments Kontakt featuring the sounds of grasshoppers.
In August 2011 I went on a field recording trip to a local park called Sonsbeek in my hometown Arnhem. I’ve recorded a range of grasshoppers from a distance and very, very, very close by. Sounds easy, but it was really difficult to record them properly. It took me around 5 hours to obtain reasonable data for processing. All audio was recorded using the binaural technique.
Recording location: the Sondsbeek park in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

World Instruments for Kontakt features
- Kenyan Sistrum – a forked rattle from Kenya. It’s about 16x5x1 inches, made of a natural forked branch. Two wires strung across the fork hold a number of rusty, flattened metal bottle caps, which act as jingles. Most of the samples are single hits, either short (with the rattle held vertically) or long (with the rattle at an angle). Sample 19 is long looped shake at no particular tempo.
- Vietnamese Cricket (Sanh Sua) – a Sanh Sua, a frog/cricket noise maker from Vietnam. It’s about 11x6x2 inches, made of wood bound with cane and inlaid with abalone. It’s shaped somewhat like a pair of tongs; gently squeezing the handles pushes the two almond-shaped ends together, causing them to rattle against each other.
- Ghanan Marimba – a simple 10 key marimba from Ghana. It’s about 26x16x8 inches, made of wood. The keys, which are relieved in the middle to bring out the fundemental, are attached to the frame/resonator with twine. This instrument lacks the usual gourd resonators, and was probably made for the tourist trade.Note that the given pitches are very approximate; while the instrument is reasonably in tune with itself, it is not at standard A=440 pitch.
- India Hatheli – a jignle stick from India. It’s about 10x2x0.5 inches, made of wood with flat brass jingles. The samples include single sharp hits, some of which have multiple bounces of the jingles, as well as softer hits made by twisting the stick. There is also a digitally reversed sample, and a loop of 1/8 notes accented in 4/4 at 120 BPM.
- Kenyan Box Rattle – a rectangular shaker or rattle from Kenya. It’s about 10x5x0.5 inches, made of reeds bound together with nylon thread, wooden end pieces, and probably filled with pebbles. Most of the samples are single hits, either short (with the rattle held vertically) or long (with the rattle at an angle for a rainstick-like effect). Samples 20 and 21 are long looped shakes at no particular tempo.
- Kenyan Kpoko Kpoko – a double-ended wooden bell from Kenya. It’s about 15x3x2 inches, carved from a single piece of wood with two small clappers in each bell tied in place with wire.
- Thailand Ching – a pair of small hand bells from Thailand. They are about 2x2x2 inches, and made of bronze. The ching is the timekeeper for traditional Thai ensembles (eg. pi phat or mahori). It plays a repeating pattern of alternating closed and open tones. In contrast to tradional European music, the accents (marked with the closed tone of the ching) are on the second and fourth beats in the measure, with the strongest emphasis on the fourth beat. This pattern usually starts slowly, with one “ching” per measure, and repeatedly doubles in speed as the piece progresses. This information on the ching comes from the essay “The Music of Thailand” by David Morton. The samples include open and closed strokes, as well as some longer open rings. There are also digitally reversed and looped tones. Note that the pitch is very close to a standard western “C”. Finally, there is a loop of the traditional pattern at 120 BPM.
- Tongue Drum – offically the Catania Bass Bamboo Tong Drum. It’s made from a large half-cylinder of bamboo with a padauk top/keys. Note that the given pitches are approximate, due to the interaction between the tongues, the notes are more like chords with one tone slightly predominating.
- Vietnamese Fish Scraper – a wooden scraper/rasp and woodblock from Vietnam. Stroking the stick along the “fins” on the fish’s back produces a slightly ascending noise somewhat like a frog. The stick stores neatly in the fish’s mouth. The samples include up and down strokes as well as some single hits. The pitch is approximately an “f”. Note that single hits and some of the scrapes work quite well as pitched sounds in a sampler.
