Somerville Sounds has released a free virtual drum instrument which revisits Jon Meyer’s original Soft Drums prototype.
A remake of the original, Soft Drums Lite uses the same samples but with added functionality like filter, saturation, room reverb, and slam control.
The first Soft Drums launched on January 13, 2020, made with more ambition than know-how. I was figuring out my process and spent hours creating a stop-motion tutorial, even though the library required Kontakt and had no GUI.
Fun fact: The drum samples were muted using baby spit-up towels—not exactly glamorous, but it worked! Without Soft Drums’ surprising success—along with Flute+Violin—I might never have continued making sample libraries.
Available as a “pay what you like” download, Soft Drums Lite comes in VST3, AU and AAX plugin formats for Windows and Mac.
