Native Instruments has released a new video profiling Jlin, an electronic producer known for her explosive and uncompromisingly original sound.
In the four-minute primer, she explains her philosophy on originality and creativity, details her collaboration with dancer Avril Stormy Unger, and reflects on her rapid rise to prominence.
The video’s soundtrack includes Jlin’s recent Komplete Sketches contribution, a work-in-progress that became Nyakinyua Rise, the second track from her Dark Lotus EP on Planet Mu (released Feb 10th).
Originally from Gary, Indiana, Jlin is one of the most fiercely original producers in electronic music today. In this video, she explains her footwork routes before telling of the moment a comment from her mother spurred her to forge an entirely unique musical identity and adopt a new, sampling-free approach to creation.
“I had sampled Teena Marie’s Portuguese Love, and I asked her to listen to it,” Jlin recounts. “She said to me, ‘It sounds good, but what do you sound like?’ And that question changed everything.”
Jlin’s music was recently featured in season one of Komplete Sketches – a series of 24 works-in-progress created by 24 contemporary electronic producers using only the instruments and effects of KOMPLETE 11. The sketch, which eventually became Nyakinyua Rise, is a hard-hitting combination of samples from various DISCOVERY SERIES libraries.
