The Thunder Drum is a percussive instrument from Indonesia. It consists of a cylinder with a spring attached to the end. When shaken a thunder-like sound is produced. The bells are an assortment of dragon engraved bells from China. The Vietnamese Lithophone is essentially a xylophone made from stone.

The lithophone features hits and also the sound of the stones being bowed with a violin bow. The bells are a single preset, with the sounds of the individual bells spread chromatically across the keyboard for playability. The thunder drum has a patch featuring all the sounds and separate sound design patches, which are semi-melodic in nature.

Soniccouture Skiddaw Stones updated to v1.1 + new Ondes library coming soon

Soniccouture The Skiddaw Stones

Soniccouture has released version 1.1 of the Skiddaw Stones, a Kontakt sample library featuring a lithophone composed of 61 tuned and shaped rocks, made from the rare hornfels stone, found in Cumbria, England.

We’ve given Skiddaw Stones a cosmetic facelift, and more importantly, we’ve added 30 new sound design Presets that explore the sonic limits of what you can do with a ton and a half of rare rock.

Added to that is a new effects page, featuring the full Soniccouture IR Reverb collection, which really sets the stones off beautifully.

The Skiddaw Stones is now available at 30% off the regular price of 59 EUR (excl. VAT) by using coupon code Y7FIMHS8D2 at checkout. The update is free for registered users.

Soniccouture has also announced a new library: Soniccouture Ondes.

A sneak preview of our next release ; it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve had so many requests for this instrument over the years.
We recorded it with Thomas Bloch, the master of such things, in December last year. It’s sounding very good, with a completely unique character.

Soniccouture releases The Skiddaw Stones

Soniccouture The Skiddaw Stones

Soniccouture has released The Skiddaw Stones, a unique new sampled instrument for Kontakt, EXS24 and Live.

A Lithophone ( litho = stone, phone= voice ) dating from 1840,The Skiddaw Stones are composed of 61 tuned and shaped rocks, made from the rare hornfels stone, found in Cumbria, England. Created by Joseph Richardson, a stonemason and musician, it took almost thirteen years to collect and shape enough individual notes of hornfels to make an eight-octave range. The massive task of assembling this instrument consumed Joseph so absolutely that he and his family were reduced to poverty. Once complete, Richardson and his sons toured Europe as The Rock, Bell and Steel Band, and even performed at Buckingham Palace, by command of Queen Victoria.

The Stones are a permanent exhibit at the Keswick Museum and Art gallery, who very kindly agreed to let us record this rare instrument. The Stones were painstakingly transported to Music Farm Studios, Cumbria, where two different sets of mallets were used to laboriously capture large sets of velocity hits, then an extra articulation was recorded – the sound of the head of the wooden mallet being scraped across the stone surface – a surprisingly haunting and resonant sound.

The result is a truly bewitching instrument, one that sounds truly ancient, even older than it is. Totally unique rock music.

The Skiddaw Stones features

  • 2.5 GB Library – Kontakt Live! EXS24.
  • 24 bit 44.1 Khz Stereo.
  • 12 Velocity layers.
  • Wood + Rubber mallets.
  • 5 Round Robin layers.
  • KSP Jammer Script.

The Skiddaw Stones is available for purchase as a download for 59 EUR and on disc for 69 EUR.
