Embertone Harmonette for Kontakt available to download

Embertone Harmonette

Embertone has launched Harmonette, a free virtual instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt.

The Harmonette is a rare, antique instrument, and in all of our research we could not find a similar one! It looks like a recorder, but functions and sounds more like a melodica. And it’s super old – our best guess is somewhere between 60-80 years.

The Christmas-like colors inspired us to offer the Harmonette as a free, time-limited instrument… the window of opportunity to download this will be very small. So what are you waiting for!? Grab this instrument and make some music!

Harmonette features

  • One squeaky toy, huge range of sounds.
  • 11 NKI files.
  • 32 MB installed.
  • Sample resolution: 48 Khz / 16-bit stereo.
  • Note: Native Instruments Kontakt version 4.2 or later full retail versions required.

The library is a free download at Embertone for a limited time.

AfroDJMac Free Ableton Rack #18: Melodica Rack

AfroDJMac Melodica Rack

AfroDJMac has released the Melodica Rack, a free sound library for Ableton Live.

For many years, my melodica has served me well. It’s easy to play and has, in my opinion, a warm friendly charm. I made a lot of use of it on my Forest Far album, and recently I began using it in my live performances, running it through my Vocal Effect Rack and mangling it to my hearts desire.

This week I share it with you in the form of a free Ableton Live Rack / Sample Pack. I’ve racked it up with some useful effects, Morphing Filter with LFO, Vibrato, Grain Delay, Bit Crusher, and Vocoder. It does everything from the traditional Melodica sound to the bizarre and unexpected.

The Melodica Rack is available as a free download (valid email address required).

Cinematique Instruments releases Experimental Box V2

Cinematique Instruments Experimental Box V2

Cinematique Instruments has released Experimental Box V2, the second part in a series of experimental sample libraries.

This time we focuses on objects and elements we found in a smithy of an artist blacksmith. We created a nice mish-mash of highly playable rhythms, ambients and instruments which are perfect for writing music in an experimental and minimalist way or giving your music a special character.

We just spent some hours in a smithy and recorded everything we could our hands on (next time we´ll definitely spend some more time): Nails, anvils, grindstones, ferreous tools, metal shapes, tubes, resonating plates, rattling sheets and any kind of machines. We´ve beaten, scrubbed and rattled the material and objects with hands, metal or rubber hammer, sticks and iron bars and came out with a wonderful assortment of textures, morphing pads, weird percussion and undefined instruments.

Experimental Box V2 features

  • Anvil – Different sounds of beating the anvil, 17 velocity layers.
  • Arcus Response – Iron hits with random delays. ModWheel adds weird noises.
  • Dark Sheet – very deep and dark plate modulated through microphone movement, ModWheel changes scenario, rotator switch.
  • Ferrous Loops – 35 sophisticated tempo-synced loops made of Ferreous Percussion, several knobs to control the sound.
  • Ferreous Percussion – nails, metal clear, saws, unsorted hits of cans and tins and undefined smithy sounds.
  • Grinding – 22 loops or one shots of close recording of grinding objects.
  • Knatter – undefined deep crackling.
  • Low Machine – a machine hum suspense pad, ModWheel controls amount of suspense.
  • Metal Glass Sizzle – prudent and shy mystic texture, ModWheel adds digital distortion.
  • Metal Resonance – low and calm spooky pad, ModWheel morphs sound.
  • One Minute Melodica – melodica played by the blacksmith, distorted.
  • Rattling Sheet – undefined deep rattling, ModWheel adds texture.
  • Small Saw Hit – enormous deep but soft hits.
  • Spanner – nice assortment of 8 different spanner.
  • Strap Arp – tie-wrap arpeggiator.
  • Tipping The Plate – deep metal percussion sound.

Experimental Box V2 for Kontakt 3 or higher is available to purchase for 22 EUR.

  • Additional Noise Samples.

Some interesting things I found recently:

Headgear Drone Machine by Tristan Shone

# Drone Machines by Tristan Shone.

Drone Machines are custom made machines fabricated from raw materials and utilizing open source circuitry.

The devices draw heavily on aspects of industrial automation, robotics and mechanical tools and devices, focusing on the eroticism of interaction with machine.

The machines require significant force from the performer, aligning he or she with the plodding drone and doom influenced sounds that are created.

# Masonverb by Brian Green: The masonverb is a diy mic with a reverb like effect to it, basically its a glass plate reverb, it was made by building a contact mic into a masonjar which leads to the name.

# Chord Triggering in Ableton Live (Vimeo)

# The Problem with Digital Music

Interesting article by sound designer Tim Prebble.

Is there a problem with digital music? Its so odd reading about the endless piracy & copyright problems, and how the music industry is apparently suffering & dieing when to me, contemporary music feels more vibrant than ever. Every week I discover new music & not just ‘new’ bands, but often highly evolved music that has existed for a number of years, but for whatever reason I just had never heard before. In many ways I think what I am enjoying is the new democracy where I am more likely to discover a new independent band or composer, than have a new act promoted and/or forced upon me by dinosaurs…

But for the moment lets ignore music of the past & consider contemporary music, music that has been created with no involvement or reliance on the old music industry. What are the problems associated with it?

# Waveformless: 5 Non-Musical Purchases to Improve Your Life in the Studio

Tom Shear lists some things that come in handy in your studio.

Being a musician can be expensive. I tend to break down musical purchases into "sexy" and "non-sexy" categories. Buying a new synth? Sexy. Buying MIDI cables? Non sexy. The thing is, a lot of the time, it's the non-sexy purchases that can make the biggest difference in our day to day lives in the studio. So today I'm going to concentrate on a few of these that I've found particularly important.

# – The d-touch sequencer and the d-touch drum machine are fully and freely available for download (Registration needed)! Please try them out and spread the word!

Audio d-touch is a collection of applications for real-time musical composition and performance, with very special user interfaces. The collection includes a drum machine and a sampling sequencer, both are controlled by spatially arranging physical objects on an interactive table surface. Each object represents a sound, and its position with respect to the surface is mapped to certain playback parameters. For example, the horizontal position of an object represents the timing of the sound. The system is extremely low cost and now it can be freely and fully downloaded from All is needed to get audio d-touch to work is a standard computer (PC or Mac) with a webcam and a printer.

# Behringer’s Latest Rip-Off Job:

Peter Kirn writes:

Look out: Behringer, already a notorious rip-off artist, is taking the “first step in [the] company’s reinvention of online presence.” I shudder to think what the coming steps will look like. But yes, the new site looks a wee bit familiar. It actually gets worse as you dig into the layout.

Is anyone really surprised? Don’t we all know Behringer’s game already?

The Conet Project

# The Conet Project – Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations

For more than 30 years the Shortwave radio spectrum has been used by the worlds intelligence agencies to transmit secret messages. These messages are transmitted by hundreds of “Numbers Stations”.

Shortwave Numbers Stations are a perfect method of anonymous, one way communication. Spies located anywhere in the world can be communicated to by their masters via small, locally available, and unmodified Shortwave receivers. The encryption system used by Numbers Stations, known as a “one time pad” is unbreakable. Combine this with the fact that it is almost impossible to track down the message recipients once they are inserted into the enemy country, it becomes clear just how powerful the Numbers Station system is.
