ADDAC System has announced the latest module in its growing family of expressive controls for Eurorack. Similar to other modules in its 300 series of expressive controllers (including the ADDAC303 Muscle Sensing, ADDAC308 Light to CV, and others), the ADDAC310 Pressure to CV offers a new means of controlling the nuances of sonic expression.

The ADDAC310 follows the heritage of traditional wind and breath controllers with one major difference: the pipe contains no means for the air to escape, creating an abundance of pressure inside the tube – which is controlled by the user’s mouth. For seasoned woodwind or brass musicians, this working principle may sound unorthodox – but using this approach, the pressure can be controlled for longer periods without the need to draw a new breath or learning circular breathing techniques.

Breathing life into a patch

While this may seem like an unconventional approach to creating and controlling sound through a Eurorack module, users will find that it is relatively easy to control the pressure in one’s mouth, while still breathing through the nose.

The Pressure to CV module includes a standard melodica pipe, which connects to an air filter before ultimately connecting to the module’s front panel. The signal captured by the sensor is then sent to two independent sections with exactly the same functions as seen in the signal flow diagram below:

Once the pressure of the breath is captured at the pipe input stage, users can access either of the two ‘Response’ knobs to calibrate the pressure curves of the sensor. These knobs can be adjusted from exponential (fully counter-clockwise) to logarithmic (fully clockwise) or they can be set to linear in the middle at 12 o’clock. Typically, the exponential setting will be more sensitive to high pressure, while logarithmic will be more sensitive to lower pressures.

Meantime, Hold buttons at the top of the module will maintain the current voltage value when engaged (with LED on). The hold state can be changed by either pushing the button again, or by the gate input – which will hold the signal while the gate is on. These features, combined with other controls on the module, offer an unparalleled degree of expressive control in almost any Eurorack modular system.

Priced 340 EUR, the ADDAC310 Pressure to CV is available now at the ADDAC store and from ADDAC System’s network of retailers around the world.
