Focusrite announces new compression and equalizer emulations for Liquid Mix

Focusrite Liquid Mix

Focusrite has announced the release of 21 new compressor emulations and one new EQ emulation for Liquid Mix.

Focusrite’s Liquid assets will help you to make the most of your Focusrite Liquid products. With Liquid assets, you’ll find a growing library of emulations, programs and snapshots, with helpful filters and information regarding the original unit emulated.

The 15 new compression emulations are based on two compressors:

  1. API 2500 Stereo Compressor (serial number 001475) — The emulations offer combinations of Soft, Medium and Hard Knee settings; Loud, Medium and Normal ‘Thrust’ settings; and Feed-back and Feed-forward compression. This compressor can offer subtle to aggressive compression. The ‘Thrust’ settings are various levels of high-pass filtering in the sidechain, allowing less bass signal being fed to the compressor’s detection circuit. This results in heavier / punchier bass in the output signal. Feed-back is a vintage style, while feed-forward is a modern style of compression.
  2. Millenia STT-1 (serial number 0-166) — ‘Twin Topology’ Recording Channel. The emulations offer a combination of value (VT) or solid-state (SS) input stage, with or without transformer (TX), then routed to valve (VT) or solid-state (SS) compressor.

The EQ emulations are based on the original Mk1 Chandler Limited Edition EMI/Abbey Road Passive TG Channel.

This is a Unique EQ! The Chandler Limited Channel MKII Abbey Road Special Edition EMI is a recreation of several classic circuits and combines a TG2 preamp section with an equalizer that was redesigned from an equalization circuit used in the TG12410 Transfer or mastering console. It offers very sweet high frequencies with large inductor-based solid low frequencies, and a very high “Q” mid cut section.

The new emulations are available to download for free for all Liquid Mix users (including Liquid Mix HD).

Focusrite introduces Liquid Saffire 56, Focusrite Plug-in Suite and Guitar FX Suite

Focusrite has introduced a number of new products at the NAMM show.

The Liquid Saffire 56 is Focusrite’s new flagship Firewire interface. It has generated a great deal of excitement in the industry as it marries Focusrite’s celebrated Liquid technology with its new generation of Firewire interfaces (led by the critically acclaimed Saffire Pro40). Two of the eight mic pre’s use the third generation of Liquid pre amps, building on technology used in the Liquid Channel and Liquid 4Pre.

Focusrite Plug-in Suite

Focusrite have also announced the release of two Plug-in suites: The Focusrite Plug-in Suite provides a collection of EQ, Compression, Reverb and Gating VST/AU plug-ins from one of the most prestigious names in pro audio. The Compressor and Gate have been modeled on Focusrite’s hardware devices, using the measurement of Focusrite’s custom optos to achieve a vintage optical sound. The EQ module delivers a similar signature to the original Focusrite ISA EQ curves, and the reverb is based on classic studio designs and has been developed to allow users to get the right reverb sound with the minimum effort.

Focusrite Plug-in Suite

The Guitar FX Suite from Focusrite consists of eleven professional VST/AU plug-ins for guitarists. These include five of the world’s finest guitar amp models and four distortion pedal effects, all courtesy of ‘Overloud’, experts in the field of accurate guitar amp modeling. The amp models include plug-ins based on the Vox AC30, Marshall JCM900, Fender Twin, MESA Boogie Rectifier and the Fender Bassman. The pedal models include plug-ins based on the Boss DS-1, the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Electro Harmonix Big Muff and the Dunlop Fuzz Face.

Both the Focusrite Plug-in Suite and the Guitar FX Suite will be available in January.

WaldFlöte

Some interesting things I found recently:

# WaldFlöte — The WaldFlöte project is basically a MIDI retrofit of a 1890's era 16 foot pipe organ. It converts MIDI input into solenoid drive to directly press the keys on one of the manuals – there is no permanent modification to the organ.

Members of Dorkbot Edinburgh have spent the last 7 months or so working on this and we're pretty pleased with it. It was publicly announced at the Electron Club Open Day on 18th October 2008 in Glasgow.

Check the project page for detailed info and some videos.

# Bodysnatchers – Zeno Music Visualiser

Glenn Marshall writes:

This is my first attempt at music visualisation, based on the Zeno animation system I’ve been developing for my first two videos Music is Math and Metamorphosis. This time it’s Radiohead with their Bodysnatchers track from In Rainbows.

# Propellerhead – Bassline Battle – Got funk? Got bass? For a chance to win astonishing prizes, enter the Propellerhead 2008 bassline battle. Fire up Reason and put together the funkiest, illest, baddest bassline and drum beat combination possible.
1st prize: Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 Audio Interface, KRK Rokit Powered 5 G2 Monitors + KRK 10s Subwoofer and Novation ReMOTE SL COMPACT 25.

Singing Sock Puppets

# Singing Sock Puppets – Matthew Irvine Brown's puppets can be tuned to sing in any scale or mode.

At the minute their voices come from a small Max/MSP patch and some very basic electronics, but he can also be rigged up to be a MIDI controller.

They can help illustrate relatively complex musical theory – such as the differences between blues, chromatic and pentatonic scales – through play and storytelling; this scale terminology is relatively advanced, and doesn't normally enter the school curriculum until children choose to specialise in music at GCSE level in the UK (ages 15 – 16).

# V-Synth GT FREE Sounds The download adds a synth museum’s worth of sounds to the V-Synth GT, with over 450 recreations of classic analog synthesizers from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s plus a host of classic Juno, Jupiter, SH, 303 and D-50 sounds. There are also new filter bank patches specifically designed to control external audio sources. Also available, the MV-Series Free Sounds: Dirt&Grime Drum Kit – This new drum kit is available for existing 8000 and 8800 owners and spans a range of musical styles from urban, R&B and electro house. The kit has a slighty gritty sound and a wider-than-normal range of sensitivity so you can experiment with changes in swing and volume.
