Roland V-Drums World Championship 2
Upload a video of yourself playing drums for a chance to enter the semi-finals.

The U.S. portion of the V-Drums® World Championship 2 begins with the V-Drums U.S. National Championship. The U.S. national competition gives drummers throughout the U.S. a chance to make history by competing nationwide with solo drum performances on the TD-30KV V-Drums V-Pro® Series and other Roland percussion products. Along the way, U.S. contestants can win professional percussion gear and swag, with the National Champion earning the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the V-Drums World Championship 2 in April, 2013, in Frankfurt, Germany.

Contestants start by submitting a video audition link via YouTube™ or other video sharing sites, to compete for 48 semi-finalist slots. For the video auditions, contestants can perform on either acoustic or electronic drums, and will be evaluated on musicianship, technique, style, creativity, and other criteria. Eight semi-final live events will be held nationwide on September 22 and 29 to select the final eight contestants for the national finals on October 31 at PASIC in Austin, Texas. During both the semi-final and national final events, contestants will be performing exclusively on Roland V-Drums® and other Roland electronic percussion products.

The U.S. National Champion will receive a TD-30KV V-Pro® drum set, Drum Workshop hardware, and other prizes. The runner-up will receive a TD-15KV V-Tour® drum set, Drum Workshop hardware, and other prizes. Additional prizes from DRUM! magazine and Vic Firth will be awarded to selected contestants during all phases of the U.S. contest. The national finals event will include live performances by a top drumming artist and celebrity professional drummers as the guest judges. During the live events, contestants will be judged and scored on musicianship, technique, style, and the creative use of technology in their drum performances.

Entries are being accepted now through August 24.

Hal Leonard releases Delay Genie and MyRecord Deal apps

Hal Leonard has released Delay Genie and MyRecord Deal, the first two music apps based on the best-selling MusicPro Guides series.

Hal Leonard’s best-selling book and DVD series MusicPro Guides brings together the most experienced authors in the music industry to give established and aspiring music professionals quality instruction that yields professional results. Last fall, Hal Leonard re-launched its MusicPro Guides YouTube channel (youtube.com/musicproguides), which streams the high-quality audio-visual media that accompanies its books or actual excerpts from its DVDs. It’s been a huge success, reaching thousands of subscribers and reaching 1.5 million views.

And now, MusicPro Guides goes mobile. Hal Leonard has released its first two free MusicPro Guides iPhone apps featuring cornerstone authors Bobby Owsinski and Moses Avalon, with an app from Bill Gibson, author of the highly successful Hal Leonard Recording Method, to follow soon.

“We are releasing these apps as part of our commitment to have MusicPro Guides available in every form that musicians use,” says John Cerullo, publisher for Hal Leonard Books. Watch for more MusicPro Guides apps in the near future.

Avalon Apps Delay Genie

Bobby Owsinski’s Delay Genie

In less than one second, Delay Genie calculates to the millisecond the exact amount of delay for any live venue setup and/or any recorded musical setup. The “Studio” tab replaces the delay chart in many recording studios that shows delay times for drums and vocals. Tap your BPM or enter it manually, and the app displays 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64 note time increments, plus their respective triplet and dotted note companions. Just set your effects box to the number displayed on the app. The “Live” tab saves live mixing engineers the agonizing math required to suss out a concert venue. Enter room measurements, and the app displays delay time between the stage and speaker cabinets. It also accounts for differences in temperature that can affect live delay times.

Bobby Owsinksi, creator of the app, says, “I wanted to design an app that I would use myself. Setting delay times, especially triplets and dotted notes, is vitally important to the mixing process, and the Delay Genie helps a mixer do this job very easily. What’s more, the price is right (free)!”

Bobby Owsinski is a music producer/engineer and best-selling author of over a dozen books including the new second edition of Music 3.0: A Survival Guide for Making Music in the Internet Age (Hal Leonard Books).

Avalon Apps MyRecord Deal

Moses Avalon’s MyRecord Deal

MyRecord Deal is a mobile app version of the MARC (Moses Avalon Royalty Calculator), which music business professionals and educators have been using for over a decade. It calculates the profits and losses generated by virtually any US record deal, offering information on how much musicians actually make on record sales and the actual “penny rate” of each single or album. It’s a tool for both serious music professionals looking to budget a production and for anyone curious about how much a hit song is actually worth.

MyRecord Deal also comes with an in-app help book that explains record label accounting procedures, how labels calculate royalties, and how to negotiate effectively with a label to get the best deal for the artist.

“This app will do two things: For those signed or signing to a label deal, it will give you transparency both in money owed and how to negotiate a better deal,” Moses Avalon, creator of the app, explains. “For those doing the DIY thing, it will allow you to accurately budget your recording and touring so that you don’t overspend. For many, an App like this is nothing short of a truly liberating experience.”

Moses Avalon is a top music business consultant, artists’ rights advocate, and best-selling author of music business texts such as Confessions of a Record Producer and 100 Answers to 50 Questions on the Music Business.

Related: , , , , , , Posted in news on Jul 08, 2011 - comment 0 comments

TC-Helicon has announced the ‘Gone Loopy’ competition, which runs from 30 June to 30 September.

TC-Helicon Gone Loopy competition
Requirements to participate: a TC-Helicon product with looping capability (VoiceLive Touch, VoiceLive 2 or VoiceJam app for iPhone), a personal YouTube account and an open, creative mind.

The grand prize of the ‘Gone Loopy’ competition is a US$1000 in cash plus a 45-minute lesson via Skype with the vocal looping master, Beardyman. Additionally, there are 5 runners up prizes – a ‘mystery’ TC-Helicon product – and the 5 perticipants who upload the most video entries will also be awarded with a TC-Helicon MP-75 Modern Performance Microphone.

To enter the competition, participants just have to complete 3 simple steps. First, they must record a video of themselves creating layers of vocal loops, using a TC-Helicon looping device. Second, upload the video to a personal YouTube video channel, making sure that ‘TC-Helicon Looping’ is included in the title of the video, and third, complete the online entry form on TC-Helicon’s website. To increase the chances of winning all participants are free to loop these 3 steps as many times as they want to – a new video must be submitted each time, of course.

All winners of the competition will be selected exclusively by the amazing voice loop and human beatbox master: Darren Foreman aka ‘Beardyman’. In a way, he could be seen as the personification of TC-Helicon’s overall goal: to support all singers’ natural right to express themselves in any way they feel like. Beardyman currently uses an impressive setup of looping devices and effects when creating his layers of vocals, including several pieces of gear from the TC-Helicon family of products.

Audio-Technica announces final shortlist for its Alternative Christmas Tune Competition

Audio-Technica

Audio-Technica has announced the final six shortlist of its alternative Christmas track competition.

It launched the competition in October and has received a huge wave of diverse entries from all across the UK and some from further afield.

The aim of the new music competition was to seek out fun and vibrant alternatives to the age-old tradition of Christmas carols and songs. The nationwide competition was launched through the company’s Facebook and Twitter channels, with entrants required to submit video entries via YouTube.

The online competition was not restricted to any particular type of music so bands, DJs or music producers from any genre had the opportunity to show off their skills.

The competition’s judge, Steve Levine, acclaimed producer and chairman of the Music Producers Guild, joined the team to carefully sift through the entries and create a shortlist of six finalists. The judging panel want the public to make the final decision on the best entry by voting for the track they believe should win the top prize of £500 worth of Audio-Technica equipment.

You can vote for your favourite video by visiting this online poll. The winning entry will be announced on Thursday 23rd December.
