Some interesting things I found recently:

# Meet Marv (Marv), a MIDI Actuated Robotic Vibraphone.

Marv can play music of high complexity, far more complex than a human player could ever achieve, as Marv is capable of striking any and all keys simultaneously, as well as damping each key individually. Marv can play much faster than a human vibraphonist, repeating single notes as quickly as 25ms apart. Marv can play with sensitivity and feeling limited only by MIDI programming effort. Marv is a platform for further research on musical automation and real-time musical interaction.

# Noteput

Noteput by Jonas Friedemann Heuer is an interactive music table with tangible notes, that helps students to learn the notation of music.

“Notput” is an interactive music table with tangible notes, that combines all three senses of hearing, sight and touch to make learning the classical notation of music for children and pupils more easy and interesting.

All basic clefs, note values and accidentals exist as single wood elements. Whole, half, quarter and eighth notes differ not only in their form, but also in their weight: Long note values are heavier than short ones.

# Record grooves under an electron microscope

Via SynthGear:

Chris Supranowitz is a researcher at The Insitute of Optics at the University of Rochester. Along with a number of other spectacular studies (such as quantum optics, trapping of atoms, dark states and entanglement), Chris has decided to look at the relatively boring grooves of a vinyl record using the institute’s electron microscope. Well, not boring for me.

Awesome images! Lots more on Chris’ website (note to those who are entomophobic; includes ladybug and fly images).

# 8 band graphic EQ for the Launchpad

From Illuminated Sounds:

I thought it would be cool to have a graphic eq display on the launchpad so I built this 8 band graphic EQ. As of now, it has these controls:

  1. Adjustable peak filters on each band
  2. Individual band volume controls for those unruly frequencies

Sensomusic Usine

Sensomusic has announced the release of Usine 5.0, a universal audio software especially designed for live or studio utilization.

Usine is made by musicians and audio engineers to respond to their specific problems in a lot of domains like live sampling, effect processing or sound design. Usine is a real musical instrument, flexible and powerful if you like to transform, resample the sound on stage, improvise and create unusual effect.

Changes in Usine v5.0

  • Gesture and Multi-touch Implementation – All design modules can receive Multi-Touch and Gesture informations that you can use directly in all the patches to create very ergonomic systems.
  • Video Tracker Module – Enables audio interaction with a camera. Motion detection, dark zones and light zones.
  • Intelligent Auto Wiring – Fast auto wiring system to build patches faster than ever… For that just Drag&Drop a Module or a VST directly on the wire to insert it in the process chain.
  • New Grid concept – The new Grid mode mixes row/cell presentation and interface builder mode.
  • Surround – Built-in 16 channels surround mixer and aux buses. If it’s not enough, all audio modules can handle up to 64 channels. Direct surround recording in the Sampler
  • VST’s layouts – Total integration of VST’s in personal interfaces. Vst’s forms can now be located in controls panels or in interfaces.
  • Patch window – The Patching area is now a stand alone window to improve paching in dual screens systems.
  • New layouts – Serious improvements of interface building. All controls are now resizable and with new layouts possiblilities.
  • More than 300 improvements and modifications, especially a new engine, more powerful and lighter.

Usine Pro is available to purchase for Windows PC (standalone/VST) for a promotional price of 90 EUR until March 31, 2010 (regular 120 EUR). An educational license is available for 50 EUR, and a limited but fully functional free version can be downloaded.

Some interesting things I found recently:

# MStretchSynth Demo – Kevin Schlei (2010)

'MStretchSynth' uses multi-point (multi-touch) data streams to create a synthesis instrument driven by the relationships between points. Instead of mapping touch positions (X and Y coordinates) directly to synthesis parameters, relationships such as angle, distance, and velocity compared to other points are used.

'MStretchSynth' uses angle, distance and total velocity between points to map to synthesis parameters pitch, amplitude and delay depth.

Harmonic Ratio Arpeggiator

# Harmonic Ratio Arpeggiator

John Fisher writes:

This is my first system for making melodies and chords in just intonation: a harmonic arpeggiator. There are two different tables containing numbers for the numerator and denominator, and these tables can be moved through independently, at different speeds. Midi input triggers notes, but only the time and octave of the input notes is taken, and the rest is controlled by the ratio sequencers. I have implemented this system in both my Nord g2 modular and in Reaktor, so I can make them work together.

# Gotta Groove Records – "Groove With Us"

Nick Cavalier’s short documentary about a new vinyl pressing plant in Cleveland Ohio, called "Gotta Groove Records".

They specialize in 7" and 12" Vinyl creation/manufacturing using PVC molding. Check them out here: gottagrooverecords.com

# Five EQ mistakes and how to avoid them

Kim Lajoie writes:

EQ is one of the most important tools available to audio engineers. Used correctly, instruments sound great and seem to fit together effortlessly. Used incorrectly, the mix resembles a battlefield with every instrument trying to destroy the others while fighting to be heard. One of the difficulties of EQ is that it is relative – the right settings depend entirely on the raw sound and the mix; there are no specific settings that will work every time. The key to using EQ effectively is to learn how to listen to the raw sound and identify what tonal changes will emphasise its best qualities and make it work in the mix.

# K-Def x Beaterator
