SampleTekk has announced sfzED versions of its Steiny D, Steiny D Close and Rain Piano instrument libraries.
The magnificent Steinway D, recorded in a concerthall for the true concert grand experience. This microphone perspective is normally the preferred configuration for recording a live classical piano performance, such as a recital. The microphones are placed at a sufficient distance let the tone fully engage the room. You might even say that the room is really the featured player here, as much as the piano.
The “Close” perspective was recorded with the microphones placed very close to the strings. Normally, this isn’t the way you would record a classical piece, but you will find that this perspective gives you a great presence and brilliance. Try this version for an in-your-face pop or jazz sound, or for bold and aggressive features.
The Rain Piano was recorded after some extensive Tom Waits listening. Specially the ”Mule Variation” album, (great stuff!). I fell in love with the piano sound on that record and decided to make something in that line.
The sfzED sample libraries are available for purchase at a 50% introductory discount for a limited time only.

Soundiron has launched the 10th title in the Iron Pack series of sample libraries for Native Instruments Kontakt and sfz.
We went to the Austin Zoo & Sanctuary in Texas to record the mating calls of a pair of rare Galapagos Tortoises. Let’s just say that these ancient reptiles can be surprisingly vocal in the act of consummating their love. Yes, mother nature is a mysterious and many-splendored thing indeed.
We recorded actual tortoise mating vocalizations in great detail, yielding 4 dynamic layers with plenty of round-robin variations. We then edited and programmed it all into a playable “tuned” percussion set and looping sustains. You’ll find a remarkable level of body and bass when pitched down, making it great fodder for creature sfx. But that’s just where we got started. We live and breathe to find new sonic ideas and bend them into new sources of musical inspiration.
So next, we used our secret sound design techniques to resonate, stretch, warp and sculpt the raw source into an eclectic array of 33 unique, very useful and remarkably musical ambiences, atmospheric textures, drones and pads. They’re perfect for soundscape creation, dramatic underscoring, layering and building inventive melodic instruments. We’ve included an easy yet powerful interface and room & fx impulse options to give you plenty of freedom. The is the largest Iron Pack yet, with 350 MB and 66 samples, all for the ridiculously low intro price of only $2.99!
Iron Pack #10 is available for purchase for $2.99 USD until December 2nd, 2014. Requires Kontakt 4.2.4 or later (full version) or an SFZ 2.0 compatible engine.

Karoryfer Samples has released Cowsynth, a sample library featuring medieval bagpipes mapped both as bagpipes and as a synthesizer.
For thousands of years, bagpipes have been the sonic terrorist’s weapon of choice. Cowsynth brings that terror to the 21st century by taking samples of bagpipes and treating them as oscillators in a simple synthesizer. Though designed with obnoxious big room plucks in mind, it turned out to be a lot more than that.
Bagpipes with their strong upper partials make a very nice organic substitute for a saw wave oscillator, and with eight-voice unison they make great pads, strings and organs. And obnoxious bagplucks, too. The pipes themselves were built based on a medieval drawing (so they’re not very Scottish), and the bag is cowskin – that’s why we gave it the Cowsynth name.
- One traditional and one chromatic bagpipes mapping.
- Bagpipes mappings include separate voices for drone and melody, trills and keyswitchable chirps.
- Five different synthesizer-style mappings with different unison and detune algorithm.
- Synthesizer mappings include AHDSR envelope, vibrato and resonant low-pass filter controls.
- All synthesizer mappings include pad, pluck and organ versions.
- WAV samples and SFZ mappings.
- 13 MB download size.
The library is available to download at no charge. Requires Plogue Sforzando.

Bedroom Producers Blog has announced the release of ESQ-1 Re-Boot, a free sample pack featuring samples from the Ensoniq ESQ-1.
Neil Paddock of How To Program Drums has released ESQ-1 Re-Boot, a free collection of Ensoniq ESQ-1 hybrid synthesizer samples. I was lucky enough to join Neil for this great project and so I’ve created an additional set of NKI Patches (for use with Kontakt 5) which you can download for free on BPB.
ESQ-1 Re-Boot features 40 original instrument patches from the legendary Ensoniq ESQ-1 hardware synthesizer, known as one the finest hybrid synthesizers (with analog filters and digital oscillators). The library contains 497 samples in total, sampled across six octaves for each of the included instrument patches.
ESQ-1 Re-Boot is a free download for Kontakt 5, SFZ, Reason & Ableton Live.

- Two round robins.
- Sustain pedal on and off.
Piano in 162 for Kontakt and sfz is available to download at no charge. Donations are welcome.
