Review: Toontrack The Blues EZX

Toontrack The Blues EZX

Toontrack’s latest expansion for EZdrummer and Superior Drummer 2.0 is The Blues EZX, a sound library featuring two drum kits and MIDI grooves played by seasoned drummer Hans Lindbäck.

The Blues EZX comes with two complete kits; A 1970s Gretsch And A Calfskinned Swedish Levin set from the 1940s.

On top of that, it features contemporary Paiste and Sabian crashes, vintage Zildjan A and K series cymbals as well as extras such as a suitcase and a set of calfskinned tambourines. All instruments were handpicked and in many cases road-worn by the sampling drummer himself, a blues musician with more than half a decade worth of experience behind the kit playing the blues.

The Gretsch kit includes a nice versatile 14×20″ kick drum, a deep, fat sounding 5½x14″ Slingerland Radio King snare, and 8×12″ and 14×14″ toms. An alternative preset is available for the Gretsch kit, swapping the kick and snare with a suitcase and a 30′s 6½x14″ Premier Brass snare.

The Levin drum kit includes a deep 14×28″ kick, a 60′s Premier Wood 5½x14″ rich sounding snare, and high and low tuned 9×12″ toms. These drums all have calf skinned heads.

One hihat is included in all kits, a 14″ Zildjian New Beat/Rock Beat combo, another choice for versatility. The cymbals include vintage 60′s Zildjian A and K series rides (19″ & 20″) and crashes (10″, 12″ & 18″), as well as a 16″ Paiste crash and 16″ and 18″ Sabian hand hammered crash cymbals.

Finally, two additional Grover Tambourines round off the setup.

The Blues EZX comes with a library of MIDI grooves, 13 songs in total in shuffle, swing, straight and 12/8 categories. Song include a number of grooves with closed hihats, open hihats, cymbals, breaks, fills, intros and endings. The library spans a large variety of tempos, from 80 to 198 bpm.

Check the video below for a quick impression of the sounds and grooves.

Toontrack’s Blues EZX for EZdrummer and Superior Drummer 2.0.

So what do I think?

Product: Toontrack The Blues EZX
Format: EZdrummer / Superior Drummer 2.0
Price: 69 EUR / $89 USD
Like: Spot on drum sounds and grooves, versatile kits
Don’t like: –
Verdict: 9/10

The Blues EZX drums and cymbals have been sampled with a good variety of articulations and the included kit pieces offer sounds for a range of styles, from jazz to blues to pop/rock. Hans Lindbäck provides a great set of songs with plenty of variations, interesting fills and breaks, and most important, an authentic blues vibe.

Having played guitar in a blues band for a number of years, I really enjoyed The Blues EZX. It feels very natural and I would have loved to have the sounds of these drum kits in our band back then. While to me, blues is all about playing together, this sound library is great for rehearsing, working out ideas, or doing studio work where you would normally get a session drummer.

In short, the Blues EZX is a solid, high quality set of drum kits and grooves that are great for blues music and beyond.

Wavesfactory releases Classic Rock Drums for Kontakt

Wavesfactory has announced Classic Rock Drums, a drum sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

Wavesfactory Classic Rock Drums

We sampled a Ludwig Vistalite drum kit with a Ludwig Supraphonic snare and Zildjian cymbals and hi hat. This kit was used by John Bonham for playing live with Led Zeppelin. Although we are not trying to emulate the Bonham signature sound, this kit is perfect for playing classic rock. Its big toms and low tuned snare suites perfectly in every track.

It has 6 repetitions (round robin) and 6 velocities (from soft to strong), but the most important is that on every mic you have the real and natural bleeding of the other parts of the drum. As you can hear on the audio demos, through the mics you can hear exactly what is recorded in a real studio situation. In other words, when you play a key, the sound comes from each of the 8 mics, so there’s 8 files playing. Is like having recorded the drum yourself!

With our custom script you can control the volume, pan and tune of each mic like it was recorded in you own computer or studio. It’s exciting to play and hear it!

Do you want to have separate outputs in multi channel mode? We made a special “multi” instrument in Kontakt where each mic is in a different midi channel, so you can have each channel on diferent tracks.

The sample library is available to purchase for 9.95 EUR.

Native Instruments introduces Abbey Road Vintage Drummer

Abbey Road Vintage Drummer

Native Instruments has announced the release of Abbey Road Vintage Drummer, a new Kontakt instrument that features the sound of two vintage drum kits from the 1940s.

Both kits were recorded with a combination of state-of-the-art equipment and period microphones at Abbey Road Studios in London, providing a natural, open sound suitable for contemporary productions. For the first time in Native Instruments’ successful ABBEY ROAD Series, VINTAGE DRUMMER includes brush articulations especially recorded to provide the authentic sound and style of the swing/big band era.

ABBEY ROAD VINTAGE DRUMMER features extremely rare instruments from the earliest period of trap kit recording. The first kit consists of a 1940 Leedy 26″ bass drum, and two late-1930s tom toms once owned and used by the legendary percussionist James Blades. This combination delivers an earthy, wide open sound that lends itself to recordings where bigger, but less focused, low end is desired. A classic 1940s Slingerland Radio King was also sampled for this release. The Slingerland’s smaller 22″ bass drum and 13″ and 16″ toms provide more focus than the James Blades kit, but still deliver a warm, chunky timbre to any producer seeking a unique, natural drum sound. To add to the authenticity of this KONTAKT instrument, both kits were recorded with original calfskin heads, period snare drums dating back to the 1920s and original Trans Stamp and First Stamp Zildjian cymbals.

Native Instruments Abbey Road Vintage Drummer
The drums, the studio, the drummer: Ultra-rare drums with the authentic sound and feel of a golden era. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London.

VINTAGE DRUMMER was recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios in legendary Studio Two, originally constructed in the 1930s for big band recording. Alongside traditional microphone techniques, two extremely rare vintage microphones manufactured by EMI in the 1930s were used to add unique tonal color to VINTAGE DRUMMER. Users can mix in these ‘vintage channels’ with the modern state of the art equipment for a wide variety of unique tones not found with modern kits and equipment alone. Any combination of modern and vintage equipment can be dialed in, allowing users to customize the sound in unique and powerful ways.

VINTAGE DRUMMER also features brush articulations – a first for an ABBEY ROAD Series release. Users get inspiring brush techniques, alongside traditional snare sounds played with sticks. All articulations also come as grooves in the included groove library, which contains patterns from ragtime, swing, and jazz as well as a wealth of modern soul, funk, and indie styles. Regardless of genre, producers looking to add original flavor to their productions will find unique textures in ABBEY ROAD VINTAGE DRUMMER.

Abbey Road Vintage Drummer is available to purchase for $119 USD / 99 EUR.

StrayWorx releases DruMOD drum sample library for Kontakt

StrayWorx DruMOD

StaryWorx has announced DruMOD, a sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt with an alternative approach to drum kits.

There is an incredibly vast range of drum and snare samples on the market, some better, some worse. The most important common characteristic is all of them have been recorded in sets, and consume gargantuan amounts of HDD space, memory, and are often very complicated to manage, and set up their proper ‘sound’.

An alternative approach to drum kits

We have applied an alternative method to record drum samples: bodies and hi-hats have been recorded one by one with three separate microphones, while snare got a nice four-mike treatment.

All drum units have been recorded with 2 close- and one overhead microphone – easy to route output signals
Volumes and panning can be modified separately, and all signals can be sent to individual outputs. You can completely customize the drum’s sound experience by setting the appropriate balance between the three microphones’ signals, each representing individual audio characteristics. You can also apply your favorite effects to create an entirely personalized and unique percussion support.

Staryworx DruMOD
The DruMOD sample library for NI Kontakt features Gretsch and Zildjian pieces.

DruMOD features

  • Modularity – units can be individually loaded, an entire set as a complete drum kit, load the „multi-patch”, and create your entire drum track.
  • Low memory and CPU need.
  • Features dynamic sample loading and memory management.
  • 11 drums/cymbals included – Gretsch Broadkaster drum bodies (20×16 Kick, 14×5.5 Snare, 10×8 High Tom, 12×8 Low Tom, 14×14 Floor Tom), Zildjian K series hi-hats (14K hi-hat, 16K Crash, 17K China, 18K Crash-Ride, 20K Ride, 22k Istanbul).
  • Standard general midi drum map.
  • Extra articulation for all drum units.
  • Custom scripting – multiple round robin and velocity levels.

The DruMOD sample library is available to purchase for $16 USD. Requires full version of Kontakt 4.2.4 or newer.
