Karoryfer Samples has released Cowsynth, a sample library featuring medieval bagpipes mapped both as bagpipes and as a synthesizer.
For thousands of years, bagpipes have been the sonic terrorist’s weapon of choice. Cowsynth brings that terror to the 21st century by taking samples of bagpipes and treating them as oscillators in a simple synthesizer. Though designed with obnoxious big room plucks in mind, it turned out to be a lot more than that.
Bagpipes with their strong upper partials make a very nice organic substitute for a saw wave oscillator, and with eight-voice unison they make great pads, strings and organs. And obnoxious bagplucks, too. The pipes themselves were built based on a medieval drawing (so they’re not very Scottish), and the bag is cowskin – that’s why we gave it the Cowsynth name.
- One traditional and one chromatic bagpipes mapping.
- Bagpipes mappings include separate voices for drone and melody, trills and keyswitchable chirps.
- Five different synthesizer-style mappings with different unison and detune algorithm.
- Synthesizer mappings include AHDSR envelope, vibrato and resonant low-pass filter controls.
- All synthesizer mappings include pad, pluck and organ versions.
- WAV samples and SFZ mappings.
- 13 MB download size.
The library is available to download at no charge. Requires Plogue Sforzando.

Wavesfactory has introduced W-Bagpipes, a bagpipe instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
The xeremía is a type of bagpipe native to the Balearic Islands. It consists of a bag made of skin (or modern synthetic materials), known as a sac or sarrówhich retains the air, a blowpipe (bufador), a melody pipe or chanter (grall), and several, generally three, drones (bordones). The primary drone (roncón) sounds a tonic note, but the other drones are sometimes simply false drones for ornamentation.
The xeremia has a distinctively bright and piercing sound, which has traditionally accompanied festivals and other activities in the islands throughout history.
We sampled one solo bagpipe and a set of 5 bagpipes playing at the same time. The drones are programmed in latch mode, which means that when you play a note it’s sustained until you press it again, that’s made to make it more playable, the melody can be played normally while the drone sounds.
- Solo and ensemble (5 players).
- Recorded completely dry, in stereo with premium mics, preamps and converters.
- Drones in latch mode.
- Stereo WAV files 44.1 kHz 24 bits.
- For Kontakt 3.5 and superior, full version required.
- 60 MB installed.
W-Bagpipes for Kontakt is available to purchase for 9.95 EUR.

The Universal Piper team has announced UPiper for iOS, a definitive step ahead towards a portable virtual bagpipe.
It is not just a light version of the software but in fact the FULL “sound engine” rearranged behind a touchable command interface. Beginners on virtual bagpiping will be stunned by the quality of the bagpipe sounds that come out of this App. They can listen to a collection of Great Highland Bagpipes and their specific harmonics. Also available is a marvelous Uileann Pipe in D and a sweet Galician Gaita in C.
As in the full application, drones can be started on/off and each of the notes of these bagpipes can be triggered by a specific screen and button command. You can also modify the pitch of the bagpipe, or adjust the drone/chanter balance. There is also a bww/midi player with a tempo and articulation definition. So You can use it as a scale reminder; a drone generator for practice players; a bagpipe tuner, a bagpipe player…
Last but not least You can plug in your midi practice with a specific connection device (Irig, midi mobilizer II, Alesis dock, Camera Connection Kit) and use it as a full bagpipe sound generator while playing on a real chanter! Midi parameters and even presets of users of the full software can be uploaded on the idevice to be used as a on your Mac or PC.
Take an easy and enjoyable step into virtual bagpiping with Universal Piper on iPhone/iPod/iPad!
UPiper for iOS is available to purchase for $3.99 USD / 2.99 EUR.
